GEO & AI search glossary
Plain-language definitions of the terms that matter in Google and AI search: generative engine optimization, AI visibility, schema markup, content gaps, and more.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making content easy for AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews — to retrieve, trust, and cite when they answer a question.
AI visibility
AI visibility is a measure of whether AI answer engines mention, recommend, and cite your brand when someone asks a question in your category — and how you compare with competitors on the same questions.
Schema markup
Schema markup is machine-readable structured data — usually JSON-LD in a script tag — that states explicitly what a page is about: that this is an article, that this is its author, that these are its questions and answers.
Content gap
A content gap is a question your audience asks — and competitors answer — that your site does not cover, or covers too thinly to compete for.
SERP
A SERP (search engine results page) is the page a search engine returns for a query — today a mix of AI-generated summaries, featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, images, videos, and the traditional ranked links.
